Friends of Concord Park & Woolley Wood

This year the group is 10 years old, volunteers are more than ever needed to help care for parks and woodlands, with ever more cut backs these people are holding the fort so to speak. So if you can give 2-3hrs just once a month it would be great. Tel 0114 2403997

Jan. the gardening group started with getting on with winter pruning. and flower bed clearing.

Feb. Only the second time we have had to cancel the work morning, heavy rain had made the ground far to wet to work on. But it was so nice to receive a Community award from Sanctuary Housing for all the volunteer hours the group had put in helping to look after the park. It was a great evening held at the Owlerton hospitality suite. Along with other groups receiving community awards, we were thanked by Lord Blunkett who acknowledged the important role carried out by volunteers. The evening continued with a meal followed by a disco.

March. Clear and cold but O.K to continue to prune and clear one of the small shrubbery areas of overgrown shrubs and litter.

Good news the Bluebell Festival will take place in Woolley Wood on Sat. 30th April 11-00am-4.00pm. It will be at the lower Wincobank site in Woolley Wood which is just a few minutes from the Wincobank children's playground.

Buses 3,35,36,37, walk up from the car park by the Children's playground on Ecclesfield Rd., S9 1NW. into the woods 5min walk.

Activities will include Bronze smelting, Black Smithing, Willow Work, Charcoal Making, Open Fire Cooking, Woodland Nature Quiz.

April work morning was cold and the rain kept off for most of the morning, so we were able to clear one of the perennial boarders of the old growth from last year.

May HSBC are again joining the group to help us spread a thick layer of mulch on all the shrubbery area's, we really appreciate this groups help.

The gardening group will continue to meet on the 2nd Tues. in the month, throughout the year, volunteers always welcome, for information call James Smith 0114 2403578.
